Vastu Compass & Direction Finding - Essential Tools for a Harmonious Home
Why most home direction readings are wrong
Five common errors that ruin Vastu setups.
Using smartphone compass near metal
Smartphone compasses are highly sensitive to nearby steel (reinforced walls, metal furniture, appliances). Readings can be off by 20-45° without the user noticing.
Ignoring magnetic declination
Magnetic north differs from true north by 0-5° across India. In Mumbai it's about 0°, in North India up to 3°, in the East up to 2°. Most DIY Vastu ignores this correction.
Taking reading from one point only
Compass readings vary across a home due to electrical wiring, rebar, and furniture. Accurate direction-finding requires 3-5 reading points and averaging.
Measuring from the wrong reference
Vastu defines "facing direction" as the side of the main door, not the direction the building faces. Many people reverse these, leading to inverted remedies.
Not calibrating for magnetic interference
Modern apartments have heavy electrical conduits and rebar in walls. Without calibration, compass readings inside apartments are unreliable.
Three compass types which to use
Each has specific use cases and accuracy levels.
Basic magnetic compass (₹150-500)
Standard scout/student compass. Adequate for identifying 8 major directions. Accuracy: ±5° in interference-free areas. Limitations: no degree markings for precise measurement, sensitive to metal. Use case: initial home orientation, beginner Vastu.
Professional Vastu compass (₹800-3,000)
Larger dial with degree markings (0-360°), magnetic damping for stable readings, often includes 16-zone Vastu overlay. Accuracy: ±1-2°. Essential for: 16-zone Vastu work, consultant-level home mapping, accurate yantra placement.
Luo Pan (Chinese Feng Shui compass, ₹3,000-15,000)
The most complex directional tool. Contains concentric rings with Feng Shui symbols, zodiac signs, trigrams, and 24-mountain directions. Used for advanced Feng Shui analysis. Not essential for pure Vastu work but useful for Feng Shui + Vastu integrated practice.
Smartphone compass app (free, with caveats)
Acceptable for outdoor preliminary readings. Indoor use is problematic due to metal interference. If using, step OUTSIDE the home for readings, then transfer the orientation to your floor plan. Always calibrate the phone compass (figure-8 motion) before each use.
Professional surveyor's transit (if available)
Used in architecture and construction. Accuracy: 0.1-0.5°. Overkill for residential Vastu but the gold standard. If you know a surveyor friend, a single 30-minute visit can establish your home's exact directions then you're set for life.
The 7-step accurate direction-finding protocol
Follow this sequence for reliable results.
Step 1: Choose your compass
For serious Vastu work, invest in a professional Vastu compass with degree markings. Do not rely solely on smartphone apps for indoor readings.
Step 2: Calibrate in a neutral outdoor location
Take your compass to a location 20+ feet from any building, vehicle, or metal structure. Confirm the needle points north consistently. If it wavers, the compass is faulty replace.
Step 3: Determine magnetic declination for your city
Mumbai: 0°W. Delhi: 1°E. Kolkata: 0°E. Chennai: 2°W. Bengaluru: 1°W. The declination value is added or subtracted to convert magnetic north to true north. Most Indian cities have very small declination, but for precise work, note the correction.
Step 4: Stand at the center of your main door
Position yourself EXACTLY at the threshold of your main entry door, facing OUTWARD (looking out of the home). The direction you're facing is your home's "facing direction." The opposite is the "sitting direction."
Step 5: Take readings at 3-5 points
Read the compass at: (1) main door threshold facing outward, (2) center of home (Brahmasthan), (3) a window in any wall, (4) a second window perpendicular to the first. Average the readings. If readings vary by more than 10°, you have interference issues to troubleshoot.
Step 6: Transfer to your floor plan
On a printed floor plan, draw the North arrow based on your averaged readings. Then overlay the 8-direction or 16-zone grid. This printed plan becomes the reference for all Vastu remedies.
Step 7: Verify with sunrise/sunset test
On a clear day, observe where the sun rises (approximate East) and sets (approximate West) from your home. Compare to your compass readings. If there's a major discrepancy (>15°), your compass readings have interference issues and need rechecking.
