Peeli kaudi (yellow cowrie) is the small shell used in Lakshmi puja, kept in the cash box, locker or purse to hold wealth. Traditionally it is offered on Diwali and Friday Lakshmi puja, then kept wrapped in red or yellow cloth in the money place of the home. Odd counts of 5, 7 or 11 are used.
What peeli kaudi is used for
The kaudi was currency before coinage in India, which is why it stayed in the Lakshmi tradition as a symbol of circulating money rather than stored money. In practice families use it in three places: inside the cash box or golak of a shop, inside the home locker with jewellery, and on the puja altar during Lakshmi puja and Diwali.

Puja vidhi for Lakshmi puja
- Wash the kaudi in clean water, then in raw milk, then in clean water again.
- Apply haldi and kumkum. Place on the puja thali facing the Lakshmi idol or photo.
- Offer during the Lakshmi puja along with the coin and the kalash.
- After the puja, wrap in red or yellow cloth and place in the locker, cash box or purse.
- Refresh on the next Diwali. The old kaudi can be kept or immersed in flowing water.
Yellow kaudi vs white kaudi
Yellow (peeli) kaudi is the one used for Lakshmi and money practice. White kaudi is used more commonly in general puja and in some regional traditions for protection. If your purpose is the cash box, locker or purse, yellow is the one specified.
