Vastu Plants for Every Area of Your Home - Complete Direction Guide
Core Vastu principles for plants
Apply these universal rules before direction-specific placements.
No thorny plants indoors
Cactus, roses, bougainvillea, and other thorny plants create aggressive energy indoors. Keep them strictly in outdoor gardens, ideally in the SW or W. Never near bedrooms or main entrance.
Healthy plants only
A dying or wilting plant in your home is worse than no plant. Decaying plant matter generates negative energy. Remove and replace dead plants within 48 hours.
Right pot materials
Clay and terracotta pots are energetically superior. Plastic pots are acceptable. Metal pots work only for specific plants and specific directions.
Leaf shape matters
Round-leafed plants (Money Plant, Peperomia) are auspicious for wealth zones. Pointed or sword-shaped leaves suit protective zones. Heart-shaped leaves for relationship areas.
Morning sunlight exposure
Plants placed to receive morning (east) sunlight carry stronger positive energy. Plants receiving only evening/afternoon sun need cleansing more frequently.
Water element connection
The water used to feed indoor plants should be room-temperature, not cold. Never use salty or chemically-treated water for Vastu plants.
North-East (Ishan) Water & Space zone
The most sacred zone. Only specific pure-energy plants belong here.
Tulsi (Holy Basil) the supreme NE plant
Tulsi is the single most auspicious plant for the NE. It purifies air, amplifies spiritual energy, and is considered the living form of Goddess Lakshmi. Place in a raised tulsi mandir or terracotta pot. Water every morning before sunrise. Do not prune after sunset.
Bamboo plant (lucky bamboo, 7-stalk)
7-stalk or 9-stalk lucky bamboo in a glass vessel with water and pebbles. Represents wealth and good fortune. Use a crystal-filled glass pot for amplification. Change water weekly.
Money plant (Pothos, Epipremnum aureum)
The classic wealth plant. Place climbing up a moss stick or a wall. Round leaves signify coins. Keep trimmed and bushy never let it droop.
Jasmine (Mogra) for NE window
Jasmine near an NE window strengthens Venus and Jupiter energy simultaneously. Fragrant, feminine, prosperity-associated. Avoid in direct harsh sun.
Peace lily in white pot
White peace lily in a white or silver pot amplifies NE peace and spiritual energy. Needs indirect light, perfect for NE interiors. Excellent for meditation corners.
East Sun energy zone
East receives morning sunlight; plants here thrive and support health.
Neem tree (if outdoor) or neem sapling
Neem in the east of an outdoor garden is exceptionally auspicious medicinal, protective, and sun-energy-amplifying. For apartments, a small neem sapling on an east balcony works.
Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)
Round broad leaves, strong growth. East-facing windows suit rubber plants. Promotes stability and wealth. Requires monthly wiping of leaves.
Aloe vera in east balcony
Aloe vera is a medicinal protector plant. East-facing balcony gives it the sunlight it needs. Represents healing and resilience. Multiple pots work better than one large one.
Banana plant (outdoor east)
Banana plants in the east outdoor section are considered sacred especially in south Indian and Marathi Vastu traditions. Brings prosperity and is used in religious ceremonies.
South-East (Agneya) - Fire zone
Fire-colour flowers and warm-energy plants suit this direction.
Red hibiscus
Red flowering hibiscus in the SE garden or balcony amplifies the fire element correctly. Goddess Kali and Ganesh are associated with red hibiscus. Plant in terracotta pots.
Marigold (Genda)
Orange and yellow marigolds in the SE bring prosperity, ward off evil eye, and strengthen Venus. Use in SE pooja corners. Offer at temples monthly.
Chilli plants (outdoor SE only)
Chilli plants activate Mars energy in the SE. Never bring indoors. Suitable for outdoor SE kitchen gardens. The red chilli is the strongest energetic variant.
Red rose bush (SE garden)
Roses activate romance and marital Venus energy when placed in SE garden (never bedroom). Thorns contain the energy outward rather than inward. Healthy blooms required.
South & South-West Earth & stability zone
Heavy, grounding, protective plants belong here.
Large areca palm or kentia palm
Tall palms in the SW ground the earth element beautifully. Single-stem trees preferred. Use heavy stone or terracotta pots. Rotate for even growth.
Snake plant (Sansevieria) - SW corner
Sword-shaped leaves point upward, providing protection and releasing oxygen at night. Excellent for SW of bedrooms. Low maintenance, thrives on neglect.
Cactus - OUTDOOR SW only
The only safe place for cactus is outdoor SW. Never indoors. Never in bedrooms. Outdoor SW cactus provides protection from south-direction negative energies.
Rubber fig tree in heavy pot
Large-leafed Ficus elastica or Ficus lyrata in a heavy stone planter in the SW corner of the living room anchors the earth element in interior spaces.
West & North-West - Air/wind & metal zone
Light, airy, metal-friendly plants suit these directions.
Ferns (Boston fern, maidenhair)
Delicate ferns in the NW bring lightness and airflow. Perfect for bathrooms or shaded NW corners. Mist daily, keep moist.
Jade plant (Crassula ovata)
Thick round leaves symbolise wealth accumulation. Place in W or NW office/study. Called the "friendship tree" strengthens relationships. Minimal water needed.
Silver-leafed plants (Dusty Miller, Silver Falls)
NW is the lunar/silver zone. Silver-foliage plants amplify NW energy directly. Place near NW-facing windows for best effect.
Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)
W or NW of a living room. Requires stable light, low water. Flowing branches gently support Vayu energy movement.
Plants to NEVER keep indoors
These create chronic negative energy regardless of placement.
Cactus (all varieties)
Indoor cactus is perhaps the single most damaging plant mistake in urban homes. Thorns create perpetual aggressive energy. Remove to outdoor SW immediately.
Bonsai trees
Bonsai represent "stunted growth" energetically. Keeping them indoors signals that your own growth, career, and ambitions should remain stunted. Remove.
Dead or artificial plants
Dead plants = decay energy. Artificial plants = empty imitation energy. Both are net negative. Replace all artificial plants with real ones or remove entirely.
Dried flowers, sticks, or pampas
Dried decor has no life force. Regardless of aesthetic appeal, dried grass, branches, or flowers in a vase drain vitality from the home.
Tamarind tree (near house)
Tamarind is considered highly inauspicious in Vastu. Should never be grown in the compound. Associated with obstacles and misfortune.
Mimosa pudica (touch-me-not)
Its shrinking reaction to touch signals diminishing energy. Avoid in home gardens. Not suitable for indoor placement anywhere.
