Where the nine stars sit in 2026 and 2027, and what to place in each sector
What flying stars are
Flying Stars (Xuan Kong Fei Xing) is the time-based branch of classical Feng Shui. Nine stars, numbered 1 to 9, move through the eight directions and the centre of a home in a fixed order, and the annual chart changes every year on Li Chun, the start of spring in the Chinese solar calendar, which falls on 4 February. Some stars are welcomed and activated; others are calmed with an element that drains them. For natal charts, monthly stars and the maths behind them, see how flying star charts are calculated (Period 9).
Period 9 began on 4 February 2024. In this 20-year cycle the 9 is the strongest prosperity star. The 8, which ruled Period 8, is waning: still positive, but no longer the main wealth star.
| Star | Traditional meaning | Element | Usual approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Career and new opportunities | Water | Support it with water, or with metal, which feeds water |
| 2 | Illness star, by tradition linked to low energy and sickness | Earth | Cure with metal (brass items, a six-rod metal wind chime, a metal Wu Lou); keep red and fire away |
| 3 | Quarrel star: arguments, disputes, legal friction | Wood | Cure with red or fire, such as a warm lamp; no wind chimes |
| 4 | Study and romance: learning, exams, writing, relationships | Wood | Support with fresh flowers or bamboo, and a study desk |
| 5 | Five Yellow, the misfortune star: obstacles and mishaps | Earth | Cure with metal; no renovation, drilling or heavy activity in its sector |
| 6 | Heaven luck: authority, mentors, support from seniors | Metal | Support with metal or crystal |
| 7 | Loss and robbery star: theft, loss, deception | Metal | Cure with water or blue; keep fire away |
| 8 | Wealth star of Period 8, now waning | Earth | Keep its sector active, clean and well lit |
| 9 | Celebration and future prosperity, strongest in Period 9 | Fire | Activate with warm light, red or purple |
The cures follow the five-element cycle: metal drains earth, so metal calms the 2 and 5; fire drains wood, so fire calms the 3; water drains metal, so water or blue calms the 7. These are traditional labels and remedies used by practitioners, not forecasts.
How to read the chart and find your sectors
You need a floor plan, a compass and ten minutes.
- Find the centre. Divide your floor plan into a 3 by 3 grid of nine equal parts, the same way Vastu locates the Brahmasthan. The middle square is the centre; the eight outer squares are the eight sectors.
- Take compass readings. Stand near the centre with a compass, away from steel cupboards, appliances and wiring. Take three to five readings at different points and average them, as our Vastu compass guide explains. A phone compass is easily thrown off indoors; a prismatic Vastu compass is steadier.
- Mark the eight directions. Each direction covers 45 degrees of the compass, as in the table below. Draw North on your plan first.
- Lay the year's chart over your plan. Our charts put North at the top, the way most Indian floor plans are drawn. Chinese almanacs often print South at the top, so the same chart can look upside down there.
- Treat each star where it lands. A star affects whatever room, or part of a room, falls in its sector. Calm the difficult stars (2, 3, 5 and 7), support the helpful ones (1, 4, 6, 8 and 9) and leave the afflicted sectors undisturbed.
| Direction | Compass range (degrees) |
|---|---|
| North | 337.5 to 22.5 |
| North-East | 22.5 to 67.5 |
| East | 67.5 to 112.5 |
| South-East | 112.5 to 157.5 |
| South | 157.5 to 202.5 |
| South-West | 202.5 to 247.5 |
| West | 247.5 to 292.5 |
| North-West | 292.5 to 337.5 |
The 2026 flying star chart (Fire Horse year)
In force from 4 February 2026 to 3 February 2027. The 1 star sits in the centre, so the eight sectors run from 2 in the North-West to 9 in the South-East. The lunar Chinese New Year fell later, on 17 February 2026, but flying star charts follow the solar calendar.

2026, sector by sector
| Sector | Star | Meaning | What to do | What to avoid | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NorthYear Breaker, Three Killings | 6 | Heaven luck: authority, mentors and support from seniors | Activate it quietly with metal or crystal. A brass tortoise on a shelf, facing into the home, is the classic North object. Keep the area calm, because the Year Breaker and Three Killings also sit in the North this year. | Renovation, digging or drilling; sitting with your back to the North (Three Killings) | Brass tortoise with plate |
| North-East | 4 | Study and romance: learning, exams, writing and relationships | Use it for study: a desk or bookshelf, with fresh flowers or lucky bamboo. Vastu also keeps the North-East for study and prayer, so the two systems agree. An education tower on the study desk is the traditional activator. | Clutter, dead or dried flowers, heavy furniture (Vastu wants the North-East light) | Education tower |
| East | 8 | Wealth star of Period 8, now waning but still positive | Keep it active, clean and well lit. Open the curtains to the morning sun and use the space every day. | Clutter, dark corners, storing unused things here | None needed |
| South-East | 9 | Celebration and future prosperity, the strongest star of Period 9 | Activate it with warm light and a touch of red or purple. Vastu treats the South-East as its fire zone, so this is where the two systems agree most. | Leaving it dark or cluttered; overdoing red (a few accents are enough) |
Red crystal ball Amethyst cluster |
| SouthTai Sui | 5 | Five Yellow, the misfortune star (obstacles and mishaps, by tradition) | Calm it with a silent metal cure: a metal Wu Lou on a raised surface. The Tai Sui shares the South this year, so keep the whole sector quiet. | Metal wind chimes (our wind chime guide keeps them out of the South); renovation, drilling, digging or heavy activity; new red decor or candles; sitting facing South (Tai Sui) | Metal Wu Lou |
| South-West | 7 | Loss and robbery star: theft, loss and deception, by tradition | Feng Shui calms the 7 with water or blue, but Vastu keeps water out of the South-West. Use a symbolic cure instead: a small blue rhino on a shelf in the living area. Keep valuables locked away and the zone heavy and stable. | Fountains, aquariums or water bowls (Vastu); candles and red lamps; the blue rhino in a bedroom | Blue rhino |
| West | 3 | Quarrel star: arguments, disputes and legal friction, by tradition | Calm it with fire: a warm lamp, a red cloth or cushion, or a small red jasper stone. | Wind chimes; fountains or aquariums, since water feeds the 3 star's wood element | Red jasper |
| North-West | 2 | Illness star, by tradition linked to low energy and sickness | Calm it with metal: a six-rod metal wind chime (the North-West is a metal chime zone in both systems), a metal Wu Lou or brass items. | Red decor, candles and lamps; hanging the chime above a bed or seat |
Six-rod metal wind chime Metal Wu Lou |
| Centre | 1 | Career and new opportunities | Water supports the 1, but Vastu keeps fountains and aquariums out of the exact centre (the Brahmasthan). Keep the centre open and bright and add a blue accent instead, such as a lapis lazuli sphere on its stand. | Heavy furniture, clutter, a water feature at the exact centre | Lapis lazuli sphere |
2026 afflictions: Tai Sui, Year Breaker, Three Killings and Five Yellow
Four annual afflictions sit on top of the star chart. The first three come from the year's animal and are fixed to compass directions; the Five Yellow is the 5 star itself.
| Affliction | Where in 2026 | What tradition advises |
|---|---|---|
| Tai Sui (Grand Duke of the year) | South, in the S2 sub-sector (172.5 to 187.5 degrees) | Leave it undisturbed: no renovation, drilling or loud activity. Do not sit facing it; having it behind you is traditionally considered supportive. |
| Year Breaker (Sui Po) | North, in the N2 sub-sector (352.5 to 7.5 degrees) | It sits directly opposite the Tai Sui. Do not start renovation, digging or drilling here. |
| Three Killings (San Sha) | North | No renovation here, and do not sit with your back to it. Facing it is acceptable. |
| Five Yellow (the 5 star) | South | A silent metal cure such as a metal Wu Lou, and no renovation, drilling or heavy activity. It shares the South with the Tai Sui this year. |
What this means in 2026: the South (Five Yellow and Tai Sui) and the North (Year Breaker and Three Killings) are the two sectors to leave alone. At a desk, facing North keeps the Tai Sui behind you and the Three Killings in front of you.
The 2027 flying star chart (Fire Goat year): start on 4 February 2027
Put these cures in place by 4 February 2027 and keep them until the next Li Chun in early February 2028. Every star moves back by one: the 9 comes to the centre, and the eight sectors run from 1 in the North-West to 8 in the South-East. The lunar Chinese New Year falls two days later, on 6 February 2027.

2027, sector by sector
| Sector | Star | Meaning | What to do | What to avoid | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North | 5 | Five Yellow, the misfortune star (obstacles and mishaps, by tradition) | Calm it with metal: move the metal Wu Lou here, or hang a six-rod metal wind chime (our chime guide allows metal chimes in the North). A brass tortoise kept here since 2026 adds metal too. | Renovation, drilling, digging or heavy activity; new red decor or candles |
Metal Wu Lou Six-rod metal wind chime |
| North-EastYear Breaker | 3 | Quarrel star: arguments, disputes and legal friction, by tradition | Calm it with gentle fire. Vastu keeps the North-East light in colour and free of heavy fire, so let the morning and evening diya of a North-East puja corner, or a warm lamp, do the work. See our North-East Vastu guide. | Wind chimes; deep red paint or decor (Vastu); renovation, drilling or digging (Year Breaker); clutter | None needed (the diya is the cure) |
| East | 7 | Loss and robbery star: theft, loss and deception, by tradition | Calm it with water or blue. Vastu is comfortable with water in the East, so a small tabletop fountain or a bowl of fresh water changed daily works here, as does a blue rhino facing into the home. | Candles, red lamps and other fire; letting fountain water go stale | Blue rhino |
| South-East | 8 | Wealth star of Period 8, now waning but still positive | Keep it active, clean and well lit. A South-East kitchen keeps this sector busy naturally, and a crystal sun catcher in a South-East window spreads light. | Clutter, dark corners | Crystal sun catcher |
| South | 4 | Study and romance: learning, exams, writing and relationships | Support it with fresh flowers or a healthy plant potted in soil, and use the space for reading: a bookshelf suits the South, which Vastu treats as a heavy, stable zone. Keep the study desk itself in the North-East or East, where Vastu places study. | Water-grown bamboo or other standing water (Vastu does not place water in the South); dead flowers | None needed (flowers and plants) |
| South-WestTai Sui | 6 | Heaven luck: authority, mentors and support from seniors | Support it quietly with crystal or metal: a clear quartz cluster in the South-West corner of the living room suits both the 6 star and Vastu's heavy, stable South-West. The Tai Sui sits here, so keep the sector calm. | Renovation, drilling or noise; wind chimes (our chime guide keeps them out of the South-West); sitting facing the South-West (Tai Sui) | Clear quartz cluster |
| WestThree Killings | 2 | Illness star, by tradition linked to low energy and sickness | Calm it with metal: a six-rod metal wind chime (the West is a metal zone in Vastu as well), a metal Wu Lou or brass items. | Red decor, candles and lamps; renovation or digging (Three Killings); sitting with your back to the West |
Six-rod metal wind chime Metal Wu Lou |
| North-West | 1 | Career and new opportunities | Support it with water or metal. The six-rod metal chime hung here for the 2 star in 2026 can stay, because metal feeds water. If you add water, keep it to a small tabletop feature with metal accents. | Clutter; a large or noisy water feature | Wind chimes |
| Centre | 9 | Celebration and future prosperity, the strongest star of Period 9 | Keep the centre open and bright with warm light, and add a touch of red or purple in decor. Vastu also asks for a well-lit, uncluttered Brahmasthan, so the two systems agree. A pair of faceted crystal balls on stands spreads the light. | Heavy furniture, clutter, dark corners; a water feature at the exact centre | Crystal balls (pair) |
2027 afflictions
The same four afflictions, in their 2027 positions.
| Affliction | Where in 2027 | What tradition advises |
|---|---|---|
| Tai Sui (Grand Duke of the year) | South-West, in the SW1 sub-sector (202.5 to 217.5 degrees) | Leave it undisturbed: no renovation, drilling or loud activity. Do not sit facing it; having it behind you is traditionally considered supportive. |
| Year Breaker (Sui Po) | North-East, in the NE1 sub-sector (22.5 to 37.5 degrees) | It sits directly opposite the Tai Sui. Do not start renovation, digging or drilling here. It shares the North-East with the 3 star this year, so keep the puja corner calm. |
| Three Killings (San Sha) | West | No renovation here, and do not sit with your back to the West. It shares the West with the 2 star this year. |
| Five Yellow (the 5 star) | North | A metal cure (metal Wu Lou or six-rod metal wind chime), and no renovation, drilling or heavy activity. |
What this means in 2027: four sectors carry an affliction: the North, North-East, South-West and West. If you are planning renovation, the East, South-East, South and North-West are free of all four. At a desk, avoid facing the South-West and avoid sitting with your back to the West.
What changes between 2026 and 2027
Most cures simply move with their star on 4 February 2027.
| Star or affliction | 2026 | 2027 | What to do on 4 February 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centre star | 1 (career) | 9 (celebration) | Brighten the centre with warm light; move the blue lapis sphere to a study or work desk |
| Five Yellow (5) | South | North | Move the metal Wu Lou from the South to the North |
| Illness star (2) | North-West | West | Add a metal cure in the West; the North-West chime can stay for the 1 star |
| Quarrel star (3) | West | North-East | Take the red cure out of the West; in the North-East rely on the puja diya or a warm lamp |
| Loss and robbery star (7) | South-West | East | Move the blue rhino to the East, where a small fountain is also fine |
| Study and romance star (4) | North-East | South | Fresh flowers move to the South; the study desk stays where Vastu places it |
| Heaven luck star (6) | North | South-West | Add a clear quartz cluster in the living-room South-West; the brass tortoise stays in the North |
| Wealth star (8, waning) | East | South-East | Keep the South-East bright and busy |
| Celebration star (9) | South-East | Centre | Warm light in the centre; the red crystal ball can stay in the South-East |
| Career star (1) | Centre | North-West | Keep the North-West metal chime; add water only as a small feature with metal accents |
| Tai Sui | South | South-West | Shelve renovation in the South-West and do not sit facing it |
| Year Breaker | North | North-East | No drilling or renovation in the North-East |
| Three Killings | North | West | No renovation in the West, and do not sit with your back to it |
| Sectors free of all four afflictions | North-East, East, South-East, South-West, West, North-West | East, South-East, South, North-West | Plan any renovation or drilling in these sectors |

Feng Shui with Vastu in Indian homes
Our working rule is simple: let Vastu govern the structure of the home (zones, entrances and which room goes where) and use flying star cures as small, movable enhancements inside that structure. A Feng Shui object should never override a Vastu correction. Our guide to how Feng Shui and Vastu fit together explains the reasoning.
Where the two systems disagree in 2026 and 2027, this page follows Vastu
- Water in the South-West (7 star, 2026): no fountain or aquarium; use a blue rhino or a small blue accent.
- Water in the centre (1 star, 2026): the Brahmasthan stays open, with no water feature at the exact centre; use a blue accent.
- Metal chime for the Five Yellow in the South (2026): our wind chime guide keeps metal chimes out of the South and South-West, so the cure is a silent metal Wu Lou.
- Fire for the 3 star in the North-East (2027): no deep red or heavy fire in the North-East; the puja diya or a warm lamp is the cure.
- Bamboo for the 4 star in the South (2027): fresh flowers or a plant potted in soil, not water-grown bamboo.
Puja room
Vastu places the puja room in the North-East, with the East and North as the next choices. In 2026 the North-East holds the 4 star of study and learning, a good match for prayer and a child's study corner; keep fresh flowers in the mandir. In 2027 the North-East holds the 3 quarrel star and the Year Breaker. Keep lighting the diya morning and evening, which doubles as the fire cure, keep the space calm and uncluttered, and avoid renovating or drilling the puja wall from 4 February 2027. A mandir in the North should be left undisturbed in both years: the North holds the Year Breaker and Three Killings in 2026 and the Five Yellow in 2027.
Kitchen and stove
Vastu puts the stove in the South-East, with the North-West as the second choice, and asks the cook to face East (see our kitchen Vastu guide). In 2026 a South-East stove sits on the 9 star, so the kitchen's daily fire supports it. A North-West kitchen sits on the 2 illness star this year: keep it spotless, keep brass vessels on display as a metal cure and skip red decor. In 2027 a South-East kitchen sits on the 8 star, which likes activity and light, and a North-West kitchen sits on the 1 star, which needs nothing beyond the usual Vastu rules, such as keeping the sink well away from the stove.
Bedroom
Vastu places the master bedroom in the South-West and asks you to sleep with your head to the South, never the North (see our bedroom Vastu guide). In 2026 a South-West bedroom sits on the 7 star of loss: keep valuables locked away, avoid candles and red lamps, and if you want a colour cue, use a pastel blue accent in the bedding rather than a figurine. Keep fountains and aquariums out of the bedroom in any year. In 2027 the South-West holds the 6 star and the Tai Sui: the star is supportive, but the Tai Sui asks for calm, so avoid renovating the bedroom or drilling its walls from 4 February 2027.
Study corner
In 2026 the study star (4) sits in the North-East, Vastu's own zone for study, so a desk there serves both systems. In 2027 the 4 moves to the South. Keep the desk where Vastu places it, in the North-East or East, and support the South with fresh flowers or a bookshelf.
When to change cures
- Change on Li Chun, 4 February. Flying star years follow the solar calendar. Keep the 2026 cures in place until 3 February 2027 and have the 2027 cures in place by 4 February 2027. There is no need to wait for the lunar new year on 6 February.
- Clean before you move anything. Declutter each sector. Wipe metal cures with a soft dry cloth, and cleanse crystals as their care notes describe, for example a short rinse or a night on Himalayan salt.
- Never drill in the Five Yellow sector. That is the South in 2026 and the North from 4 February 2027. Use stands, shelves or existing hooks for cures there, and plan drilling or renovation for a sector free of afflictions (see the table above). The North is sensitive in both years, so postpone major work on the North side of the home if you can.
- Move, do not multiply. Most cures travel with their star. One cure per sector is enough; a crowded corner works against the clutter-free space both systems ask for.
- Check them at Diwali. Your Diwali cleaning is a natural mid-year check that every cure is in place, clean and undamaged.
- Monthly stars are a finer layer. Flying stars also shift every month. This page covers the annual chart, the layer most households act on; our advanced flying star guide covers natal and monthly charts.
